At Umoja Maono, we firmly believe that taking care of our volunteers is as essential as the work they do. UMHO volunteers receive comprehensive training pre-departure, in-country and post-departure.
Want to take action? Here’s the process.
-
Review our current volunteer placements and apply online in the form below. You will receive Application form. We will assess your application and contact you with a response.
-
If your application is successful, we'll assess your experience and motivations through a preliminary call. This also gives you the opportunity to discuss your application and raise any questions.
-
This step is designed to assess the interpersonal and professional skills essential for a successful placement. The interpersonal skills are: self-assurance, flexibility and adaptability, sensitivity to the needs of others, ability to work in a team, the desire to learn and help others learn, and a positive and realistic commitment to volunteering.
-
Once your acceptance is confirmed, you will need to complete necessary pre-departure procedures including medical clearance, travel booking and visa processes. You will receive Invitation letter from organisation for your project in Africa.
-
The country program office will organize in-country orientation and help you settle into your new setting during the first week. This team will support you further with any major personal, medical or security problems that may arise during your placement.
-
UMHO will support you while you prepare to return home and make a strategy for sustainability of your work. All returned volunteers are invited to attend a reintegration workshop, usually scheduled three to 12 months after your return.

“As a training architect, it was invaluable to witness how my skills could evolve beyond the confines of a traditional office. UMHO provided unwavering support, allowing me to explore the project in my unique way, and I felt bolstered throughout the journey. I wholeheartedly cherished my experience and endorse this opportunity. Leaving Tanzania, I carried lifelong memories, eagerly anticipating my next visit.”
Tobi, England
“My experience at UMHO was amazing! I was super well guided but was also free to explore the school myself! Together with the teachers, we have found the perfect balance for the kids between learning and enjoying education. I hope to be back really soon.”
Kiara, Belgium
“This was our first time volunteering and we could not be more happy with the organization. We worked with the women empowerment project and had the opportunity to meet the most kind and amazing mothers, explore their homes and businesses. All the people in the community were super friendly and made us feel really welcome. We wholeheartedly recommend this place. Lots of cool projects to get involved with, and all tailored around the volunteers, so everyone will find their place there.”
